Hey there from Nannyland,

I recently talked to my daughter who lives in Pacific Grove, California where she has been enduring (just barely) a four-day power outage. Yikes!   No offense to Punxsutawney Phil, but it doesn't look like spring is coming anytime soon, with extreme weather swirling around us on all sides.  It's a little soggy here in the desert, so I've been daydreaming of flower buds and warm spring breezes for the past few days.  This blissful reverie has expressed itself in the form of journal pages that look like a candy shop and a flower garden had a baby.  The bright, warm colors make my eyes so happy!  

Jeremiah Keltner's images are always so elegant and serene with their gorgeous Asian flair.  What could be more fanciful than kittens and flowers cascading down luxurious curls. I found just the right page in my dp stash with the perfect colors and quote for my sentiment page.      

I colored my image in warm Copic shades and framed her with a lacy Heartfelt Creations die frame.  A Spellbinders mini sprig of flowers accents the free space at the bottom of my frame.  I added matching  blooms to my sentiment page to tie the pages together.  

Yes, I think I'll keep the spring vibes going with some cheerful Valentine and Easter cards. Last night, as I was trying to go to sleep, I thought of a really cute idea for a Valentine card for my hubby. Stay tuned...I think it's going to be one-of-a-kind.   I get some of my best ideas at night.  How about you?

July Guest Design Team Project - Conie Fong Little Blossom

Hey there from Nannyland,

This month I continue to have the pleasure and privilege of creating Guest Design Team projects for Conie Fong Art.  For this project I chose this absolutely adorable image called Little Blossom.  You can find her in Conie's Etsy store HERE.  She was a joy to color in Copic shades of red and pink.

I created the tree trunk in Cricut Design Space and, since I couldn't find my white glitter paper, I cut it out in white card stock and then added sparkle with Nuvo Glitter Accents in Fresh Snowball. I love all the  beautiful glittery texture! The frame was also sized and cut with my Cricut and then edged with a gold leafing pen. I used the Cricut writing feature to  write my sentiment on an octagon shape and added a gold foil offset layer.   The blossoms are Spellbinders Mini Blooms and Sprigs,  cut out in white card stock and colored with Copic markers.  

I discovered some origami paper in my stash that matched my color scheme and added a little paper piecing to her skirt.  I used a light gray Copic marker to create soft folds. The background panel for my card is ombre DP with subtle embossed white tree branches. This was my inspiration to create a white cherry blossom tree.  I tried a dark brown trunk but decided Conie's beautiful image shows up better against a lighter background.

Be the Light - Botched Skirt Redeemed with Paper Pieced Origami

Hey there,

Anyone remember the awesome yearly stamp convention called the Rubberama that traveled across the country a few years ago? I was drawn to some gorgeous Asian stamps at one of those gatherings and bought several of them because the samples displayed in the booth were so stunning.  When I got them home, I enjoyed doing some monochromatic coloring on them but multi-colored details seemed daunting.  I was excited when I came across this one recently and knew it would be easier to work with since my stamping and coloring skills have  evolved a bit since those early days.    

The coloring was, indeed, straightforward and simple but the trouble came when I tried to color the hatch mark design on the skirt.  The more I colored, the more blotchy and messy my colors got, until I was so frustrated, I put my efforts aside and labeled them as unredeemable. But as happens so often in crafting, a random thought came to me on how I could fix my funky coloring.  Luckily, I happen to have tons of delicate origami paper in my stash just waiting to be pieced into a stylish skirt.  I stamped my image again on a piece of white paper to make a template.  I couldn't stamp her directly on the origami paper because the hatch marks would show up on my pretty paper.  I cut out my template and traced it on my origami paper. It was simple to fussy cut and glue the skirt into place on my lovely lady.  

It was so gratifying to save my discarded attempt and create a way to use this glamorous but challenging image. I embellished with some handmade Heartfelt Creations flowers with beaded centers  and a beaded die cut dragonfly, and accented her dress and the background with Nuvo drops and gel pens.    I framed her with a narrow white mat and  mounted her on a gold metallic die cut frame and a black square card base.  The sentiment was created in Cricut Design Space.

What could be more satisfying than rescuing something deemed to be beyond repair?  I think my origami paper adds elegance and  Asian style to my image.  What do you think?

 Hey there,

January starts  birthday "season" for my sweet, ultra feminine girlfriend who, fortunately for me,  lives very nearby.  She is a gorgeous redhead and is always impeccably dolled up.  I'm sure, with her affinity for animals, she would love  to wear a cute bunny in her luscious locks if it were at all practical.  She's just that sassy! 

She is a very talented artist, so I wanted to give her card an artistic flair while keeping with my girlie theme.  This Jeremiah Ketner digi was just what I needed.  His Asian art is full of charming, whimsical elements that are so delightful to color for those of us who like all things feminine.   A lacy frame surrounds my silver lined focal panel and a vellum flower created with my Heartfelt Creations Oakberry stamp, die and mold adds an ethereal touch.  Clear gems added to the stars in the bow and bunny create some twinkle.  My sentiment stamp says it all.

Sometimes the more fussy and girlie, the better.  It's a girl thing.

Pretty Little Pagoda Girl - Mo Manning and Cricut

                             

I couldn't wait to use my Copics to color this sweet little Mo Manning digi girl in her kimono. I knew the Pagoda cartridge in the Cricut Design Space would create the perfect home for her. I absolutely love designing little scenes for my stamped images to live in.  Paper dolls and doll houses...what's not to love!!!

My friend's birthday is next week and she adores all things Asian.  What a perfect opportunity for me to spend some time creating this Lori Whitlock shutter card.  This is the first time I've used this svg file and I just love it.  So many surfaces to decorate!  It's an A7 size card, so there's oodles of room for me  to go crazy adding die cuts. And I can size and stretch them in Design Space to fit my card panels perfectly.

I can imagine so many fun scenarios for using this shutter card.  I'm glad I've taken the time to become familiar with the Cricut Design Space, even if my head does explode occasionally. It's well worth the effort! There are lots of excellent YouTube videos that teach you all the ins and outs of this use friendly program. If you're a Cricut lover like I am and aren't familiar with all the fun tricks it has to offer, you should definitely take a peak.

Class-y Tuesday - Sandy Brien Asian Blues

I had a delightful time creating these cards in a class taught by one of my favorite teachers, Sandy Brien. She is a brilliant artist and I love everything she does, but she has a special flair for Asian designs.

I stamped all of the images with Blue Print Sketch distress ink and blended color from the stamped lines with a damp brush.  I used Chipped Sapphire and Black Soot inks for shading.  Sandy's samples looked like actual water coloring and although I definitely need some practice, I really like the result I got from this technique.

I lightly misted the inked bird stamp before I stamped it on water color paper and then blended with a paint brush.  I like the soft water color effect it creates.

The dancing crane is gold heat embossed on navy paper and then colored with colored pencils. A few flowers and stamps for embellishments and I came away with some beautiful cards and fun new skills to practice.  I'll bet you have some stamps in your stash that would work beautifully with this technique. Time to go on a treasure hunt!
